For over thirty years the players' briefs for my SF RPG setting have had "Flat Black" written on the cover, and games set there have been called "Flat Black games". But that isn't any sort of astrographical or political term for the area described — in-universe or out. The reason that I chose it back in the dark days of 1987 are no longer compelling. It is not longer apt, and when I am asked to account for it I refer to things and people and reactions that my interlocutors wot not of and do not care about.

I'm thinking of changing it. Which of the following do you think would be best?
  • Flat Black
  • The Human Reach
  • The Orphan Worlds
  • Scatterlings

I like Scatterlings the best, but that might come across as describing some sort of cute critter.
So I'd pick The Orphan Worlds as more evocative of the setting.

I voted for The Human Reach, purely for Vancian reasons.

"Scatterlings" is a word that I was pleased to have come across. Formally, it denotes a person of no fixed abode, such as might be a player character in a setting like this. But until you turn to a dictionary it might signify the scattered colonies. But as you say its form and sound might easily suggest a little scurrying or hiding things.

Vancian reasons are of course very persuasive.
