Too bad he died.

I never did read any of his writing, though.

Harlan was a major consultant on Babylon 5.

I read a couple of his short story collections - we was rough, abrasive man, but an incredible talent.

I posted this back when he had just passed, and people were all sharing their Harlan stories online:

I don't have a Harlan Ellison story. I've been saying that HE was my favorite author for as long as I can remember. When I was young I was a voracious reader. I must've first read his work in the magazines and anthologies of the day. I also watched the original Star Trek broadcasts, and as a Trek fan I knew about City on the Edge of Forever. I haunted libraries, and remember checking out Dangerous Visions.

I began going to New York City conventions in 1975, sometimes every weekend. I was always thrilled to see HE on the schedule. I remember listening to him read his work. I remember he and Asimov both being on-stage together, and I couldn't stop laughing. But I never waited to speak with him, I never asked for an autograph.

I've lived in Los Angeles for years. I often thought I might run into the man somewhere. I imagined that some day, I'd share something I'd written with him. It never occurred to me that he'd be gone someday.

I will console myself with a re-read of his work.
