http://evildrganymede.net/rpg/world/map ... #Section3b

I have finally added the "Further Star List" to my Realistic Near-Sol Astrography webpage - it's an excel file containing accurate locations of a bunch of major stars (including Vega, Deneb, 51 Pegasi, Spica, Bellatrix and Algol) that are more than 10pc from Sol. Some of these are in the Solomani Rim sector, some are elsewhere. The format is kinda raw but you should be able to figure out how to interpret it from the rest of the webpage (if not, ask me!).

I've been sitting on this for six and a half years (!!) and finally decided that I'm never going to draw hexmaps showing these stars and that I may as well just release the data.

Enjoy! :)

I've spot checked a few stars against the data I'm using. My data comes out pretty close, but with small differences. May be rounding errors or specific source of raw data.

Biggest issue I've really had is what to do with these stars... They aren't really likely stars for inhabitable systems...

Where I had gotten to was picking a few of the interesting stars and using them to place my polities, and naming the polities after the interesting star, with the actual habitable systems being made up stars.

Here's a top view, rendered in Astrosynthesis 3, of the 2012 RECONS near star list. Sol is in the centre, the +90° direction (towards the top of the screen) is Coreward, the 0° direction (towards the left) is the Spinward direction, and out of the screen is "north" out of the galactic plane.

I am so pleased with this! :)

Here's the view along the XY plane, looking to coreward. Again, Sol is in the middle, Spinward is to the left, Galactic North is up. Coreward is into the screen, Rimward is out of the screen.

Stay tuned - this weekend I will be doing a major update of my Near Star mapping page, including:

- RECONS 2012 Near Star List Update (current star list is several years out of date)
- Astrosynthesis DB file version of the Near Star List
- getting rid of the hex maps (they introduce too many inaccuracies) and Traveller references.
- Wordpress-ized page

Yep. Looks like their maps agree with mine, which is nice to see! At least you'll be able to explore my map using Astrosynthesis ;)

How much difference is there in the 2012 Recons data vs. the older data?

Astrosynthesis: http://www.nbos.com/products/astro/astro.htm
It's also available from DTRPG: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_i ... s_id=95347

It's somewhat specialised, but it's a pretty good 3D space visualisation tool.

ffilz - I can't recall when exactly I last updated the near star list - it could have been 2008, could have been earlier. But there are some significant differences - the parallaxes were updated, and 61 Cygni and Procyon swapped places on the list at least. And there's a bunch of new additions too that were discovered in the meantime.
