With the Pandora setting in "pause mode", I am again working on my "second
setting love", the low technology settlement on the "martian" desert world.
One of the most important pieces of equipment in such an environment would
be a protective suit for activities outside of a closed habitat, preferably one
that is a lot more comfortable than today's average spacesuits.
Looking at the current developing technologies, a good solution seems to be a
combination of a skin tight pressure suit like this one ...:http://mvl.mit.edu/EVA/biosuit/index.html
... with a powered exoskeleton controlled by nerve signals like this one:http://www.cyberdyne.jp/english/robotsuithal/index.html
Add a backpack with advanced batteries and an advanced life support system
(since the suit is powered, weight is a secondary issue) and a helmet with a
communicator and a few sensors, and you have a suit that is far less bulky than
a current spacesuit and augments the endurance and strength of the user - at
late TL 8 or early TL 9.
