The heroes were two RAAF officers who had a spaceplane that somehow combined a supersonic jet with a rocket. It was able to get to 50,000 feet and several times the speed of sound in air-breathing mode which (supposedly) left its rockets capable of the rest of SSTO.

Sounds an awful lot like the SABRE engine.

It has been a very long time, and I'm fuzzy on the details. There might nave been two separate drives.

Goddard too, I think.

Also Tsiolkovsky.

Of course!

He was working on spaceflight physics before WWI, wasn't he?

My impression is that Tsiolkovsky only worked on the fundamental physics of reaction motors, and that he didn't do any actual rocket engineering. Is that right? I thinki of Goddard and Oberth as the guys with experimental rockets.

And when did Hohmann do his work on interplanetary navigation?

Seems to me that GURPS Lensman might be useful. There are no transistors, so all the computers use vacuum tubes.
