Pets: ferrets, parrots, parakeets, songbirds, Australian magpies, crows, mongooses, pythons, iguanas, crickets, maybe monkeys.

Ecosystem essentials: ants, termites, earthworms, dung beetles, carrion flies.

The suggestion of monkeys as pets just made me think... do your planets still have assistance animals? Helper monkeys, guide dogs and so on? Or have those functions been taken over by the Internet of Things, robots and/or being able to 'cure' any and all disability?

I am thinking that this will be standard Cepheus Engine/Traveller, so that detail will be dependent on the culture.

I could see Monkeys and possibly Lemurs has pets in some cultures.

Interesting to think about worlds with accidental pest problems, like rabbits in Australia.

I was actually going there myself. It could be really interesting that an essential animal on one world is a pest on another.

Mongooses (mongeese?) in the Caribbean are one perfect example. Brought in to hunt rats, they ended up killing off the native birds. But they are essential to the ecosystem in other parts of the world.

Extreme forms of this could have Chickens or something like that killing off a native insect that is vital to the native plants being harvested by the colonists, so now they have a Chicken pest problem... :)

We have dozens of them. Rabbits, mice, cane beetles, cane toads, pigeons, starlings, sparrows, cats, foxes, horses, camels, water buffalo, deer, pickly pear, lantana, camphor laurel, fireweed, bitou bush, Monterrey pine, privet, weeping willow, bamboo, Pacific oyster, carp, rainbow trout, water hyacinth….

Yes, don't forget the plant pest species. Especially the 'ooh that would look lovely in my garden' sort, which then spread and have people constantly battling to eradicate them. Such as rhododendron bushes, Himalayan balsam, Japanese knotweed and giant hogweed.

And that animal pests fall into 2 categories:
1) How the hell did those get here? The animals stowed away.
2) What this place needs is some xyz. Humans deliberately introduced them. I think most of Australia's animal pests fall into that category!
