The board game Dark Nebula has a rather weird relationship to the OTU. It features elements from canon, such a race called Aslan, a polity called the Solomani Confederation -- but otherwise it seems completely untethered from canon.

As you might imagine, the board game features an astronomical feature called the Dark Nebula, some 2-4 parsecs wide, that creates some interference with jump drives.

Presumably the canonical Dark Nebula sector, which lies approximately 42-70 parsecs spinward of Terra, also has an eponymous feature somewhere within its borders. I don't believe this has ever been detailed.

So my question is, are there any plausible "real world" astronomical objects that might stand in for the Dark Nebula? Would such an object be readily observable from Earth in 2017?

The Coalsack Nebula certainly checks off a lot of boxes -- I can't seem to find its approximate size.

I was also wondering if a Small Molecular Cloud would work. If a 2-4 parsec wide cloud were 40-70 parsecs out, would it be readily detectable today?
