I suspect that the most important factor in the case of a candle would
be the percentage of oxygen in the world's atmosphere, the more oxy-
gen would be available, the faster the candle would probably burn.

However, in my Phalanos setting candles would be useless anyway, the
planet has a primordial atmosphere of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, much
like the early Earth, and the brave explorers need magic (after all, it is a
fantasy setting ...) to survive there. The process to develop a new spell
is a rather long and complicated one, and I doubt that the player charac-
ters will develop a spell to supply a candle with enough oxygen to burn.

Indeed. A spell that measures time seems a lot more straightforward.
