This also leaves plenty of room open for the gaming group to turn that question into a long-term campaign arc. Not at all a bad thing in my opinion.

I actually wasn't looking for a canonical answer. I was hoping for speculation.

I also agree that a canonical answer would be limiting.

I was just wondering if others had thought about what caused the Scream and if so, would they share?
