The Scream is a BIG part of the history of the history of SWN settings. It is very vague except that it is psychic in nature.

Anyone come up with a REASON for the Scream?

I haven't decided yet, but one thing I was thinking about would be: An alien race "Ascended" to an incorporeal plane and and the backlash within our plane of existence was a psychic Scream.

So what is a wonderful event for another race, basically destroyed the rest of the civilization within a few thousand lightyears.

Bitter-Sweet

Anyone else have one?

I prefer to keep it as a weird mystery. Maybe a star went supernova instantly killing a planet with many Psychics (and their last telepathic thoughts are the Scream)? Maybe an experiment by whatever faction went rogue? Perhaps an experiment in giving Psychic powers to an AI?

I am now going to kill my day pondering that question.

Though a mass killing of pychics might entail death of all living things, like a reverse star wars. And it was limited to hyperspace.

Been reading A Brief History of Time lately. Good book. Perhaps part of the universe "popped" into normal reletavity and cause a wave. Idk.

As I said, I'm going to need to think on this one.

It was caused by the destruction of a lost empire of trillions of humans by a supernova-chain-reaction near the galactic core ;)

(Yes, that's the Empress Wave. It could fit here! ;) )

The Scream started near the Veil Nebula. Not sure how they know that, but it is in the book.

I think if they chronicled when the event took place in every system they could backtrack it

Tho as a related q; was the Scream sub, or super- light speed?

It says it was essentially instantaneous. Also, since everything went to hell pretty quickly after the Scream, I still wonder how everyone was able to figure out where it started.

Doesn't really matter.

I was wondering about this, since I am considering a Long Mission using the SWN rules. At first I was going to have a mission to Earth, but I also considered a mission to the Veil nebula to investigate the cause of the Scream, which led me to wondering what the answer would be...

ok

what caused the scream

New psy weapon that worked a little too well
Somebody tried to build stable jump gates and hit the wrong harmonic
telepathy network test generated a deadly feedback loop
    Slannesh
its actually an echo radiating back into the past of something the pc's will do
there are things living in hyperspace they are at war with each other this is fall out from them using doomsday weapons
the space wales were just trying to say hello
Glorificus did manage to get the portal open before buffy jumped disrupting the dimentional barriers
Ista Visan the empress of a thousand realities attempted to claim our universe and this is the fall out from stopping her

yes i like Warhammer 40,000 Buffy: the Vampire Slayer and Champions why do you ask?

Just for reference, there'll never be a single canonical answer as to what exactly caused the Scream. I might offer possibilities and different scenarios as options, but I think it's more useful to let individual GMs make their own calls on it without being saddled by a canonical certainty. As for how they figured out the general location, it propagated in an FTL sphere from its origin point, taking about 21 minutes to erase human civilization. The death of those psychics hooked up to the jump gates provided a perfectly-timed snapshot of the wave's progress, so those planets that have had the sophistication and luck to maintain those records and collate with multiple jump gates can roughly aim toward the origin point in the Veil Nebula. Given the limits of precision, "somewhere in the Veil Nebula" is about as close as anyone can tell.
