Vellamo is the fourth planet of the F7 V star Ukku in a system of eight planets.
The diameter of the planet is 11,820 km and the surface gravity is 0.93 G, the
planet has no moon. Vellamo has a breathable atmosphere of nitrogen and oxy-
gen. It is a water world without any dry land, with an ocean depth between
170 meters and 5,800 meters. The year of Vellamo has 642 days, a day has 25
hours. There is a native biosphere of primitive life forms which are partially bio-
chemically compatible with humans and other life forms from Earth.

The Ukku System was discovered and explored by an ESA mission from the
European Union colony on Neue Heimat* in the Chinese Arm. At first the sy-
stem and its only theoretically habitable planet Vellamo were considered as
uninteresting because of the long distance from the core worlds, but then
the Life Foundation published its plan to build two space stations between
Earth and Qingyuan, which would significantly reduce the travel time of co-
lonists and supplies from Earth to Vellamo. Moreover, the Life Foundation
had already demonstrated on Austin's World that a water world can be co-
lonized, and so Vellamo became interesting for the Colonial Committee of
the European Union.

* "Heidelsheimat" is an incredibly silly name, so I renamed the colony.

Once the European Union had published its intention to establish an outpost
as the core of a future colony on Vellamo, the Deutsches Ozeanographisches
Institut and the Institut Des Etudes Xenologiques offered their scientific sup-
port, and the corporation Emartec (European Maritime Technologies) announ-
ced its interest in using Vellamo to test some of its newly developed techno-
logies. With this background and the promise of subsidies it was not difficult
to find enough colonists to start the project, and in 2300 AD the first team
arrived on Vellamo to perform a detailed survey of the planet and to prepare
the construction of a seafloor habitat with a floating interface spaceport.
The colonization of Vellamo had begun.

Are Namlos and Vellamo fictional stars? I can't seem to find any stars that correspond to them on the map ("Neue Heimat"/Heidelshemat would be p Eridani (a.k.a HIP 7751, and incorrectly referred to as Rho Eridani in 2300AD), and Kormoran is 82 Eridani. And van Maanen's star is about 23.6ly from p Eridani!

Yes, indeed. I did not find any stars useful for my setting idea where
I wanted them, and then I thought that when I was using an alterna-
te historical background for 2300AD I might just as well move the set-
ting to an alternate universe where the stars are right ... ;)

I am waiting for Colin's supplement on frontier life for the actual colonization
part of the setting, and therefore I have concentrated on the setting's back-
ground history, on the details of the planet Vellamo and its native life (three
main animal families, "trappers", "crawlers" and "snakes"), on some parts of
the technology (including most of the specialized vehicles the colonists will
use) and on the game system, the professions, skills and all that of a modi-
fied version of BRP. Most of this is done now, the setting currently has 21
pages of more or less detailed notes, and I hope that my preordered copy
of Colin's supplement will arrive in time for me to fill in the parts of the set-
ting covered by it.

My wife and I are eye-ball deep in editing and art direction at the moment, I hope to have it off to Mongoose within days. As it turns out, I overwrote by about 80%, whcih explains the delay somewhat (83,000 words instead of 45,000)

I did the same thing on 2300. I have to be more careful next time.
